During this time of the year a lot of cooking takes place and baking takes off! It’s the season of everything pumpkin! Even though I’m not a fan of pumpkin, everyone else in my household is. Pumpkin spice is a must have for the fall season. With that being said, you’ll probably run through it after making 2-3 dishes. Constantly running to the grocery store for a simple spice, that can be make in-home, is not the move. Taking 4 kids to the store, for one bottle of spice???? I’ll pass! And let’s be honest, the store shelves are pretty scarce nowadays. Thanks COVID-19! On a brighter note, it will be much cheaper to make in-home versus buying a tiny container of spice at the store. Why buy an expensive pumpkin pie spice from the store, when you can leave out all of the fillers and anti-cake agents in store-bought spices. I try to use mostly natural products within our home. Anything I can DIY, I’m on it!
By making your own spice at home you’ll have pure ingredients for better flavor! Making your own spice mix means you control the amounts. This is perfect because if I want more cinnamon and less cloves, I can alter it to my likings! I’m pretty sure you might even have majority of ingredients in your cabinet. On top of that, who wants to spend $5 on a bottle and you’re only going to get 2 tablespoons out of it!? That’s more than a Starbucks drink! Let’s face it! I’m cheap, no shame in my game!
I know you’re wondering, “What am I going to do with a bunch of pumpkin spice?” … You can add your own homemade pumpkin spice to whatever you like! Lattes, pies, oatmeal, cookies, cakes, fudge, brownies, popcorn, etc … Basically, anything you love you can use this spice with! This is seriously a MUST HAVE. This fall spices goes with just about everything. Plus, you get to use up those spices that you have in the back of your pantry! Another perk is it smells delicious!
How to make pumpkin spice
It’s simple! Reach in the back of your spice cabinet and grab a few of your spice rack staples: cinnamon, ginger, all-spice, nutmeg and ground cloves. Most recipes contain these basic spices. The only differences are the amounts.
Cinnamon is the main ingredient, so add lots of it. Next add some ginger, a touch of ground nutmeg and lastly add the allspice. If you’re into stronger spices, try adding a little bit of ground cloves. Stir the spices, making sure it’s evenly mixed. This recipe yields approximately 2 teaspoons. Store it in an air-tight jar (or any other storage container you may have). Like any other spice, you would want to keep it in a cool dry place. Enjoy!
Until next time …
