Have you ever been to a zoo 6,800 feet above sea level? Neither had I until visiting the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Hands down the best zoo I’ve been to! It’s actually the highest zoo in America. The interaction with the animals was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! All of the animals were very healthy. Unlike most zoos animals didn’t appear to look miserable and depressed. My daughter and I fed the giraffes, which get SUPER close. We bought two serving of lettuce for $5. You get about 4 leaves per serving. To make the experience stretch I broke the lettuce into small pieces. My daughter is obsessed with animals. Every time we get in the car she says “I want to see giraffes, elephants and lions mom. Frankie & Riley.” I have no clue how Frankie & Riley relates to animals but that’s what we hear EVERY TIME we crank up our car. So not only seeing the giraffes but also getting the opportunity to feed them made her day.
Unfortunately, we were unable to feed the elephants but we were able to go into the elephant hub where all of the elephants are kept and trained. We were also able to witness an elephant sleeping. I thought that was pretty cool! Elephants happen to be both me and my daughter’s favorite animal. There was a family of lions resting but there were two hanging out. They definitely made their presence known. The roar was so loud you would have thought there were microphones in their throats!
Another thing I thought was pretty cool was the wallaby walkabout. The wallabies roam free as you walk through their designated section. I must say I was kind of disappointed about not being able to see the tigers. There was a recent hail storm that cracked the glass to the tiger den. The tram also wasn’t working due to it being under construction. But we were still able to get amazing views of the beautiful city skyline. We were lucky enough to experience this right after it had snowed. Absolutely stunning views! If you’re ever near the Colorado Springs area, add the Cheyenne Zoo to your list of “things-to-do”.
